Why Google Business Profile Optimization Matters
Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important platform for local SEO. Your GBP listing appears in Google Search, Google Maps, the Local Pack, and the Knowledge Panel. An optimized GBP listing can drive more traffic, calls, and visits than your website.
GBP optimization is not a one-time task. Google regularly adds new features, changes guidelines, and updates ranking factors. Keeping your profile complete, accurate, and active is an ongoing process that directly impacts your local visibility.

GBP Setup & Verification 3 items
Claim and verify your GBP listing
If you have not claimed your GBP listing, someone else might control it. Search for your business on Google Maps. If you see "Own this business?" click it to start the verification process. Verification usually happens by postcard (5-14 days), phone (instant), email (instant), or video verification (new in 2026). Once verified, you have full control over your listing, can respond to reviews, edit information, and add content.
1st step: Go to business.google.com
2nd step: Sign in with your Google account
3rd step: Search for your business name
4th step: If it appears, click "Claim this business"
5th step: If it doesn't appear, click "Add your business"
Select the most specific primary business category
Your primary category is the single most important ranking factor for GBP. It tells Google exactly what your business is and determines which searches you appear in. Choose the most specific category available. "Italian Restaurant" is better than "Restaurant." "Emergency Plumber" is better than "Plumber." Research what categories your top-ranking competitors use with tools like Pleper or GBPspy.
1st step: Go to business.google.com
2nd step: Click "Edit profile"
3rd step: Click the pencil icon next to "Category"
4th step: Type your business type
5th step: Select the most specific option
Add up to 9 secondary categories
You can add one primary category and up to 9 secondary categories (10 total). Secondary categories help you appear in more searches. Add every category that accurately describes your business. For example, a restaurant might add: Italian Restaurant (primary), Pizza Restaurant, Pasta Restaurant, Catering Service, Takeout Restaurant, Dine-in Restaurant.
1st step: Start with your primary category
2nd step: Add related service types
3rd step: Add product types you offer
4th step: Add delivery/takeout if applicable
5th step: Add catering if applicable
Business Information 4 items
Write a keyword-rich business description
Your GBP description should clearly explain what you do, who you serve, and what makes you different. Use natural language with relevant keywords. The description appears in your Knowledge Panel and can be up to 750 characters. Include your main services, service area, and a call to action.
1st step: Include your city name naturally
2nd step: Mention your main services
3rd step: Add your unique selling point
4th step: Include a call to action
5th step: Don't stuff keywords unnaturally
Set accurate business hours including holidays
Incorrect hours are one of the top reasons customers leave negative reviews. Set your regular hours, then add special hours for holidays, closures, and seasonal changes. Google shows "Open now" or "Closed" in search results, and incorrect hours directly hurt your rankings and trust.
1st step: Go to business.google.com
2nd step: Click "Edit profile"
3rd step: Click the pencil icon next to "Hours"
4th step: Set regular hours for each day
5th step: Click "Add special hours" for holidays
Add all services with detailed descriptions
Services appear in your GBP listing and help you rank for service-specific searches. Add every service you offer with a detailed description including pricing if possible. Each service can have its own description up to 300 characters. This is free real estate for keywords.
1st step: Go to business.google.com
2nd step: Click "Edit profile"
3rd step: Click the "Services" tab
4th step: Click "Add service"
5th step: Enter service name, category, and description
Add products if applicable to your business
If you sell products, add them to your GBP listing. Products appear in a dedicated tab on your listing and can include photos, prices, descriptions, and categories. This is especially important for retail, e-commerce, and food businesses. Products can also appear in Google Shopping results.
1st step: Go to business.google.com
2nd step: Click "Edit profile"
3rd step: Click the "Products" tab
4th step: Click "Get started" or "Add product"
5th step: Upload a photo (720x720 minimum)
Media & Visual Content 4 items
Upload high-quality photos regularly
Businesses with photos receive 42% more direction requests and 35% more click-throughs than businesses without photos. Upload photos of your storefront, interior, team, products, and services. Use high-resolution images (720x720 minimum). Add photos regularly, not just once. Google favors profiles with fresh photo content.
1st step: Exterior (street view, signage)
2nd step: Interior (workspace, waiting area)
3rd step: Team photos (staff, management)
4th step: Products (individual, grouped)
5th step: Services in action (work being done)
Add a professional business logo
Your logo appears everywhere your GBP listing shows: Google Search, Maps, Knowledge Panel, and Local Pack. Use a square logo (720x720 minimum) with your brand colors. The logo should be clear and recognizable even at small sizes. Avoid text-heavy logos that become unreadable when scaled down.
1st step: Format: JPG or PNG
2nd step: Size: 720x720 pixels minimum
3rd step: Aspect ratio: 1:1 (square)
4th step: File size: Under 5MB
5th step: Background: Solid color or transparent
Upload videos to your GBP listing
Videos are underused on GBP, giving you a competitive advantage. Upload short videos (30 seconds to 30 minutes, under 100MB) showing your business, services, team, or customer testimonials. Videos appear in your listing and can significantly increase engagement and trust.
1st step: Business introduction (30-60 seconds)
2nd step: Service demonstrations
3rd step: Customer testimonials
4th step: Team introductions
5th step: Behind-the-scenes footage
Add a compelling cover photo
Your cover photo is the largest image on your GBP listing and sets the first impression. Choose a high-quality image that represents your business well. For restaurants, use your best dish. For service businesses, show your team or completed work. The cover photo appears at the top of your listing in search results.
1st step: Format: JPG or PNG
2nd step: Size: 1080x608 pixels recommended
3rd step: Aspect ratio: 16:9 or similar wide format
4th step: File size: Under 5MB
5th step: Using stock photos
Posts & Updates 2 items
Set up and maintain Google Posts

4th step: Address specific issues mentioned

3rd step: Tap "Customers" then "Messages"
4th step: Turn on messaging

2nd step: Click "Edit profile"
3rd step: Click "Contact" tab
4th step: Find "Appointment links"
