Complete guide to Google Business Profile optimization. Covers categories, description, services, products, photos, posts, Q&A, reviews, and attributes. 22 checks with code examples.

Why Google Business Profile Optimization Matters

Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important platform for local SEO. Your GBP listing appears in Google Search, Google Maps, the Local Pack, and the Knowledge Panel. An optimized GBP listing can drive more traffic, calls, and visits than your website.

GBP optimization is not a one-time task. Google regularly adds new features, changes guidelines, and updates ranking factors. Keeping your profile complete, accurate, and active is an ongoing process that directly impacts your local visibility.

GBP Setup & Verification 3 items

Claim and verify your GBP listing

If you have not claimed your GBP listing, someone else might control it. Search for your business on Google Maps. If you see "Own this business?" click it to start the verification process. Verification usually happens by postcard (5-14 days), phone (instant), email (instant), or video verification (new in 2026). Once verified, you have full control over your listing, can respond to reviews, edit information, and add content.

How to claim your GBP listing:

1st step: Go to business.google.com

2nd step: Sign in with your Google account

3rd step: Search for your business name

4th step: If it appears, click "Claim this business"

5th step: If it doesn't appear, click "Add your business"

Select the most specific primary business category

Your primary category is the single most important ranking factor for GBP. It tells Google exactly what your business is and determines which searches you appear in. Choose the most specific category available. "Italian Restaurant" is better than "Restaurant." "Emergency Plumber" is better than "Plumber." Research what categories your top-ranking competitors use with tools like Pleper or GBPspy.

How to set your primary category:

1st step: Go to business.google.com

2nd step: Click "Edit profile"

3rd step: Click the pencil icon next to "Category"

4th step: Type your business type

5th step: Select the most specific option

Add up to 9 secondary categories

You can add one primary category and up to 9 secondary categories (10 total). Secondary categories help you appear in more searches. Add every category that accurately describes your business. For example, a restaurant might add: Italian Restaurant (primary), Pizza Restaurant, Pasta Restaurant, Catering Service, Takeout Restaurant, Dine-in Restaurant.

Secondary category strategy:

1st step: Start with your primary category

2nd step: Add related service types

3rd step: Add product types you offer

4th step: Add delivery/takeout if applicable

5th step: Add catering if applicable

Business Information 4 items

Write a keyword-rich business description

Your GBP description should clearly explain what you do, who you serve, and what makes you different. Use natural language with relevant keywords. The description appears in your Knowledge Panel and can be up to 750 characters. Include your main services, service area, and a call to action.

GBP Description Template (750 characters max):

1st step: Include your city name naturally

2nd step: Mention your main services

3rd step: Add your unique selling point

4th step: Include a call to action

5th step: Don't stuff keywords unnaturally

Set accurate business hours including holidays

Incorrect hours are one of the top reasons customers leave negative reviews. Set your regular hours, then add special hours for holidays, closures, and seasonal changes. Google shows "Open now" or "Closed" in search results, and incorrect hours directly hurt your rankings and trust.

How to set business hours:

1st step: Go to business.google.com

2nd step: Click "Edit profile"

3rd step: Click the pencil icon next to "Hours"

4th step: Set regular hours for each day

5th step: Click "Add special hours" for holidays

Add all services with detailed descriptions

Services appear in your GBP listing and help you rank for service-specific searches. Add every service you offer with a detailed description including pricing if possible. Each service can have its own description up to 300 characters. This is free real estate for keywords.

How to add services:

1st step: Go to business.google.com

2nd step: Click "Edit profile"

3rd step: Click the "Services" tab

4th step: Click "Add service"

5th step: Enter service name, category, and description

Add products if applicable to your business

If you sell products, add them to your GBP listing. Products appear in a dedicated tab on your listing and can include photos, prices, descriptions, and categories. This is especially important for retail, e-commerce, and food businesses. Products can also appear in Google Shopping results.

How to add products:

1st step: Go to business.google.com

2nd step: Click "Edit profile"

3rd step: Click the "Products" tab

4th step: Click "Get started" or "Add product"

5th step: Upload a photo (720x720 minimum)

Media & Visual Content 4 items

Upload high-quality photos regularly

Businesses with photos receive 42% more direction requests and 35% more click-throughs than businesses without photos. Upload photos of your storefront, interior, team, products, and services. Use high-resolution images (720x720 minimum). Add photos regularly, not just once. Google favors profiles with fresh photo content.

Photo types to upload:

1st step: Exterior (street view, signage)

2nd step: Interior (workspace, waiting area)

3rd step: Team photos (staff, management)

4th step: Products (individual, grouped)

5th step: Services in action (work being done)

Add a professional business logo

Your logo appears everywhere your GBP listing shows: Google Search, Maps, Knowledge Panel, and Local Pack. Use a square logo (720x720 minimum) with your brand colors. The logo should be clear and recognizable even at small sizes. Avoid text-heavy logos that become unreadable when scaled down.

Logo specifications:

1st step: Format: JPG or PNG

2nd step: Size: 720x720 pixels minimum

3rd step: Aspect ratio: 1:1 (square)

4th step: File size: Under 5MB

5th step: Background: Solid color or transparent

Upload videos to your GBP listing

Videos are underused on GBP, giving you a competitive advantage. Upload short videos (30 seconds to 30 minutes, under 100MB) showing your business, services, team, or customer testimonials. Videos appear in your listing and can significantly increase engagement and trust.

Video types to upload:

1st step: Business introduction (30-60 seconds)

2nd step: Service demonstrations

3rd step: Customer testimonials

4th step: Team introductions

5th step: Behind-the-scenes footage

Add a compelling cover photo

Your cover photo is the largest image on your GBP listing and sets the first impression. Choose a high-quality image that represents your business well. For restaurants, use your best dish. For service businesses, show your team or completed work. The cover photo appears at the top of your listing in search results.

Cover photo specifications:

1st step: Format: JPG or PNG

2nd step: Size: 1080x608 pixels recommended

3rd step: Aspect ratio: 16:9 or similar wide format

4th step: File size: Under 5MB

5th step: Using stock photos

Posts & Updates 2 items

Set up and maintain Google Posts

Google Posts are short updates that appear on your GBP listing. Use them to share offers, events, updates, and products. Posts expire after 7 days (except events), so post weekly at minimum. Posts with images get 2x more engagement. Include a clear call-to-action button on every post.

Google Post types:

1st step: What's New - General business updates

2nd step: Offers - Promotions and discounts

3rd step: Events - Upcoming events with dates

4th step: Products - Highlight specific products

5th step: Post at least once per week

Create event posts for upcoming happenings

Event posts are the only GBP post type that does not expire after 7 days. They stay visible until the event date passes. Use event posts for workshops, sales, open houses, webinars, and any time-bound activity. Events appear prominently on your listing and can drive significant engagement.

How to create an event post:

1st step: Go to business.google.com

2nd step: Click "Add update" or "Create post"

3rd step: Select "Event"

4th step: Add event title (include keywords)

5th step: Add start and end date/time

Reviews & Engagement 3 items

Generate customer reviews consistently

Reviews are one of the top local ranking factors. Businesses with more positive reviews rank higher and get more clicks. Ask satisfied customers directly, send follow-up emails with your review link, add the link to receipts and invoices, and make it easy with a short URL. Aim for a steady stream of reviews, not a sudden burst.

How to get your review link:

1st step: Go to business.google.com

2nd step: Click "Ask for reviews"

3rd step: Copy the short URL

4th step: Share it with customers

5th step: Ask in person after a positive interaction

Respond to all reviews including negative ones

Responding to reviews shows Google and customers that you care. Respond to positive reviews with gratitude and to negative reviews with professionalism and a solution. Google has confirmed that responding to reviews improves your local ranking. Never argue, get defensive, or share customer details publicly.

1st step: Respond within 24-48 hours

2nd step: Use the customer's name

3rd step: Thank them for their feedback

4th step: Address specific issues mentioned

5th step: Offer a solution or next step

Monitor and answer GBP Q&A regularly

GBP Q&A allows anyone to ask and answer questions about your business. If you don't monitor this, competitors or strangers might provide inaccurate answers. Pre-populate common questions yourself, answer promptly, and provide detailed helpful answers that include relevant keywords. This is free content that appears on your listing.

How to pre-populate Q&A:

1st step: Go to your GBP listing on Google Maps

2nd step: Click "Ask a question"

3rd step: Type a common customer question

4th step: Switch accounts or wait

2nd step: Go to your Business Profile

3rd step: Tap "Customers" then "Messages"

4th step: Turn on messaging

5th step: Set up your welcome message

Add appointment or booking URL

If you accept appointments, add your booking URL to your GBP listing. This creates a "Book" button on your listing that goes directly to your scheduling system. Use Google's supported booking partners or your own scheduling page. This reduces friction and can significantly increase bookings.

2nd step: Click "Edit profile"

1st step: Wheelchair accessible entrance
