Business Identity & NAP Checklist

Complete guide to business identity and NAP consistency for local SEO. Covers business name, address, phone, hours, descriptions, and attributes. 20 checks with code examples.

Why Business Identity & NAP Checklist Matters

NAP consistency is one of the most important local ranking factors. When your business Name, Address, and Phone number are identical across every platform, search engines confidently match your listings and rank you higher. Inconsistent NAP creates confusion and splits your ranking signals.

Beyond NAP, your business identity includes hours, descriptions, attributes, and contact details. Every piece of information must be accurate and consistent across Google Business Profile, your website, citations, and social profiles.

Business Name 4 items

Standardize your business name everywhere

Your business name must be identical across GBP, website, citations, directories, and social profiles. Do not add keywords, location names, or service descriptions to your GBP name unless they are part of your legal business name. Google suspends listings that violate naming guidelines.

CORRECT (consistent):

1st step: Use your real-world business name

2nd step: Don't add keywords unless part of legal name

3rd step: Don't add city name unless part of legal name

4th step: Don't add service descriptions

5th step: Use exact same format everywhere

Audit business name across all platforms

Search for your business on Google, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing Places, and industry directories. Check that your name appears exactly the same everywhere. Document any inconsistencies and fix them. Even small differences like "LLC" vs "Inc" can hurt your NAP consistency.

Platforms to audit for name consistency:

1st step: Google Business Profile

2nd step: Google Maps

3rd step: Google Search results

4th step: Bing Places

5th step: Yellow Pages

Remove keyword-stuffed business names from GBP

If your GBP name contains keywords that are not part of your legal business name, fix it immediately. Google actively suspends listings with keyword-stuffed names. This is one of the most common reasons for GBP suspension. Use only your real-world business name.

Keyword-stuffed names (WILL get suspended):

1st step: "Smith Plumbing Best Plumber Chicago 24/7"

2nd step: "Chicago Emergency Plumber - Smith Plumbing"

3rd step: "Smith Plumbing | Drain Cleaning | Water Heaters"

4th step: "Smith Plumbing LLC"

5th step: "Smith Plumbing"

Document your official business name format

Create a document that specifies your exact business name format, including whether to include "LLC," "Inc," "Corp," etc. Share this with anyone who manages your listings. This prevents future inconsistencies when new team members or agencies update your profiles.

Business Name Documentation Template:

1st step: Always use "Smith Plumbing LLC"

2nd step: Never use "Smith Plumbing" without LLC

3rd step: Never use "Smith's Plumbing"

4th step: Never add keywords or city names

5th step: Never abbreviate to "Smith Plmb LLC"

Address 4 items

Verify address format consistency across all platforms

Address formatting must be identical everywhere. Suite numbers, abbreviations, and formatting all matter. "Suite 100" and "Ste 100" and "#100" are three different addresses to search engines. Pick one format and use it everywhere. USPS standard formatting is the safest choice.

USPS Standard Address Format:

1st step: Use full street name: "Street" not "St"

2nd step: Use "Suite" not "Ste" or ""

3rd step: Use "Avenue" not "Ave"

4th step: Use "Boulevard" not "Blvd"

5th step: Street number and name

Verify your address is correct on GBP and Maps

Check that your address appears correctly on Google Business Profile and Google Maps. Sometimes Google auto-corrects addresses or pulls incorrect data from third-party sources. Verify the pin marker is in the correct location on the map. An incorrect address or map marker can cost you customers.

How to verify address on GBP:

1st step: Go to business.google.com

2nd step: Click "Edit profile"

3rd step: Click "Location" tab

4th step: Verify address is correct

5th step: Check the map marker position

Add address to your website footer and contact page

Your business address should appear on every page of your website (usually in the footer) and on a dedicated contact page. Use the exact same format as your GBP listing. This reinforces your NAP consistency and helps search engines verify your location.

Where to add address on website:

1st step: Footer (every page):

Smith Plumbing LLC

123 Main Street, Suite 100

Chicago, IL 60601

(312) 555-1234

2nd step: Contact page:

3rd step: Full address with map

4th step: Phone number

5th step: Business hours

Fix address inconsistencies on citation sites

Search for your business on major citation sites (Yelp, Yellow Pages, BBB, Facebook, etc.) and verify your address is correct and consistent. Use a tool like Moz Local or BrightLocal to scan for inconsistencies. Fix any incorrect addresses you find.

How to fix address inconsistencies:

1st step: Audit current citations:

2nd step: Use Moz Local (free scan)

3rd step: Use BrightLocal (citation audit)

4th step: Manual search on major sites

5th step: Common citation sites to check:

Phone Number 4 items

Use a consistent local phone number everywhere

Use the same phone number across all platforms. A local area code (like 312 for Chicago) builds more trust than a toll-free number (800). If you must use a toll-free number, also include a local number. Do not use multiple phone numbers across different platforms.

Phone number consistency rules:

1st step: Use one format everywhere

2nd step: Recommended: (312) 555-1234

3rd step: Include area code in parentheses

4th step: Use dashes between number groups

5th step: Include country code if international

Set up call tracking without hurting NAP

If you use call tracking, use the tracking number on your GBP and website, but keep your main number on citations. Set up call forwarding from the tracking number to your main line. This way you can track leads without hurting your NAP consistency across the web.

Call tracking setup:

1st step: Use JavaScript to swap numbers on website

2nd step: Show tracking number to website visitors

3rd step: Show main number to search engines

4th step: Doesn't hurt NAP consistency

5th step: Use tracking number on GBP

Make your phone number clickable on mobile

Ensure your phone number is clickable on mobile devices using the tel: link protocol. Most local searches happen on mobile, and customers expect to tap to call. Add click-to-call buttons prominently on your website, especially above the fold and on your contact page.

Click-to-call implementation:

1st step: Header (sticky on mobile)

2nd step: Contact page

3rd step: Service pages

4th step: Google Ads extensions

5th step: Use large tap targets (48px minimum)

Verify phone number is correct on all platforms

Call your own business number from each platform listing to verify it works. Check GBP, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing Places, and your website. A wrong phone number means lost customers. Also verify that the number connects to the right person or department.

Phone verification checklist:

1st step: Call from GBP listing

2nd step: Does it ring?

3rd step: Does it reach the right place?

4th step: Call from Google Maps

5th step: Tap the phone icon

Business Hours & Description 4 items

Set accurate business hours including holidays

Business hours must be accurate on GBP and all platforms. Incorrect hours lead to frustrated customers, negative reviews, and potential GBP suspension. Update hours for holidays, special events, and seasonal changes. Google allows you to set special hours for specific dates.

How to set business hours:

1st step: Go to business.google.com

2nd step: Click "Edit profile"

3rd step: Click the pencil icon next to "Hours"

4th step: Set regular hours for each day

5th step: Click "Add special hours" for holidays

Write a keyword-rich business description

Your GBP description should clearly explain what you do, who you serve, and what makes you different. Use natural language with relevant keywords. The description appears in your Knowledge Panel and can be up to 750 characters. Include your main services, service area, and a call to action.

GBP Description Template (750 characters max):

1st step: Include your city name naturally

2nd step: Mention your main services

3rd step: Add your unique selling point

4th step: Include a call to action

5th step: Don't stuff keywords unnaturally

Verify hours match across all platforms

Check that your business hours are consistent on GBP, website, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, and Bing Places. Inconsistent hours confuse customers and search engines. If you have different hours on different platforms, customers will not know which is correct.

Hours consistency audit:

1st step: Google Business Profile

2nd step: Your website (contact page, footer)

3rd step: Bing Places

4th step: Yellow Pages

5th step: Industry-specific directories

Add special hours for holidays and events

Google allows you to set special hours for specific dates. Use this feature for holidays, closures, and special events. If you don't set special hours, Google may show "Hours might differ" which reduces customer trust. Set special hours at least 2 weeks in advance.

How to add special hours:

1st step: Go to business.google.com

2nd step: Click "Edit profile"

3rd step: Click "Hours" tab

4th step: Scroll to "Special hours"

5th step: Click "Add special hours"

3rd step: BrightLocal (citation audit)

How to find and remove duplicates:

1st step: Search Google for:

2nd step: "Your Business Name" + address

3rd step: "Your Business Name" + phone

4th step: Look for multiple GBP listings

5th step: Search Yelp for:

Track NAP changes and updates

Keep a log of all NAP changes you make, including the date, platform, and what was changed. This helps you track what was fixed and prevents future inconsistencies. If you change your business name, address, or phone number, update all platforms at once.

NAP Change Log Template:

1st step: |----------|-------|-----------|---------- 2026-01-15 | Yelp | Address | 123 Main St | 123 Main Street 2026-01-15 | Facebook | Phone | 312-555-1234 | (312) 555-1234 2026-01-20 | GBP | Name | Smith Plumbing | Smith Plumbing LLC

2nd step: Business name change

3rd step: Address change (move)

4th step: Phone number change

5th step: Business hours change

1st step: Go to google.com/alerts

2nd step: Enter your business name in quotes

3rd step: Click "Show options"
