Who Gets Cited in Google AI Overviews
We recorded every source Google cited across 26 AI Overviews and ranked the domains that win citations. Reference sites and industry publishers dominate, and the pattern points to how you become one of them.
Getting the top organic link used to be the whole game. Now the AI Overview can cite a handful of sources above it, and often the cited pages are not the ones ranking first below. We wanted to know who actually gets that citation and what the winners have in common.
For every query that produced an AI Overview, we logged each source Google linked, normalized it to a domain, and counted citations across the full sample. This page shows the result.
Most cited content domains
The concentration matters. When a handful of domains take most citations, appearing in an AI Overview is less about publishing any page and more about becoming a recognized source for a topic. That reputation is built on clear answers, consistent coverage, and the authority signals Google already trusts.
How to become a cited source
What the cited pages had in common
- A direct answer up front. The cited passage stated the answer in the first sentence or two instead of building to it.
- One question per page. Focused pages matched a specific query, which made the passage easy to lift intact.
- A concrete fact or number. Statements with a measurable claim read as more trustworthy than vague prose.
- Topical authority. The domain covered that subject thoroughly, not as a one-off post chasing a keyword.
None of this replaces earning authority. But it does shape how you write for it. Pair the writing pattern with real topical depth and you improve the odds that Google pulls from your page when it composes an answer.
Methodology
| Step | Detail |
|---|---|
| Sample | 26 AI Overviews drawn from a panel of 26 queries |
| What we recorded | Every source Google linked inside each AI Overview |
| Normalization | Sources reduced to registered domains and counted |
| Excluded from content list | Wikipedia, YouTube, and Google-owned properties |
| Field dates | 2026-10-13 |
| Market | United States, English, desktop |
Limitations
- The panel is weighted toward AI, SEO, and marketing topics, so the domain mix reflects those niches more than the web at large.
- A single day of collection. Source lists can change as Google rotates and updates which pages it trusts.
- Citation counts are raw totals, not normalized by how often each query triggered an answer in its topic group.
- Being cited does not prove the page caused anything. This is a count of what appeared, not a causal test.
