Three kinds of evidence, labeled on every card
Sourced statistics come from published industry studies and official Google documentation. Each one names the publisher, the year, and the sample, and 177 cards link straight to the original work. First-party statistics are computed from our own collection of 2,085 posts across 10 public platforms, plus our own Bing AI citation observations.
Every card also carries a confidence rating. High means a large sample or official data behind the figure. Medium marks a composite or a smaller panel where the direction holds but the exact number moves between samples. Where a study states its base, the card shows it as a count, for example 129 of 130, so you can quote the denominator and not just the percentage.
A deliberate before-and-after or A/B comparison. The strongest design here for a cause-and-effect reading.
Self-reported answers from a panel of people. Good for opinions and reported behaviour, weak for hard counts.
Measured comparisons across real pages, sites, or search results. Shows association only, never proof of cause.
Built from other published figures. Direction is reliable, exact number depends on the assumptions used.
Google's own logs and documentation. A factual count of what was published, not an inference.

Compiled and maintained by the Clienvora research team from published studies, official Google documentation, and our own 2,085-post dataset. The page is refreshed as new studies and dataset runs land, and the provenance bar shows the last review date and the dataset version.

How the 2,085-post dataset was collected
The eight Internal analysis statistics on this page come from our own collection. So you can judge them without trusting us, this is the full method behind them.
Posts were gathered across 2026 in rolling pulls from public feeds, ending October 15, 2026. The count on this page reflects the state of the collection at that date, and the version number changes whenever the dataset is refreshed.
A record was kept only if it was a substantive post about SEO, copywriting, content marketing, or AI search and it was publicly readable in full. Link dumps, pure promotion, duplicate announcements, and posts under roughly 150 words were dropped before counting.
Reddit contributes the largest share at 687 posts, followed by Hacker News, Stack Overflow, GitHub, Dev.to, Google News, Wikipedia, arXiv, npm, and Google Trends. The ten platforms were chosen because each is a public, archivable record rather than a private feed.
Canonical URLs are compared after removing tracking parameters. A story syndicated across outlets, or cross-posted between platforms, counts once. Every kept URL appears in the collection a single time.
Topic and category labels are assigned by keyword rules over title and body text, not by hand. That keeps the call consistent between pulls, at the cost of the occasional borderline post landing in the wrong bucket. The complaint-rate figure uses the same rules on sentiment words.
Rule output is spot-checked against a sample of posts, and pricing extraction is verified against the source text before a figure reaches this page. The limits matter: these are public discussions, so they show what people talk about, not what the market charges. Counts describe the collection, not the industry.
Reproducibility: the full statistics table with every row is downloadable above, and each first-party card links to a stable anchor here. For access to anonymised sample records or the collection rules, contact the research team.
A fixed protocol behind the AI-search numbers
The AI-search statistics on this page are not one-off searches. They come from a standing test we run on a schedule. A fixed panel of questions is asked the same way each time, so the numbers mean the same thing from one month to the next.
- Commercial investigation: "Best SEO services for small businesses"
- Commercial / pricing: "How much does SEO cost in 2026"
- Troubleshooting: "Why is my organic traffic dropping"

- exact query wording
- platform
- date and time
- model or interface version
- location and language settings
- search mode
- brand mention
- cited URL
- domain citation
A brand mention is not a citation. A cited URL is not a domain mention. A page that allows crawling is not a page an engine will cite.
Each query in the panel is run 5 times across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews. We measure variation between runs instead of hiding it, because AI systems can return different answers and citations on repeat.
These are the first observations from the protocol above, collected from Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance for clienvora.com. They cover Bing Copilot and Bing AI summaries only. They do not cover Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, or Perplexity. Citations are appearances of a clienvora.com URL as a source in an AI answer, not clicks.
| Period | Avg citations/day | Peak day | Cited pages/day |
|---|---|---|---|
| July 2026 | 10 | - | a handful |
| August 2026 | ~25 | - | rising |
| September 2026 | ~45 | 136 (Sep 29) | up to 15 |
| October 2026 | 71 | - | up to 22 |
Total: 2,674 citations across 91 days, from 10 per day in July to 71 per day in October, a 7-fold increase. Peak single day: 136 citations on September 29. Peak distinct pages cited in one day: 22.
Caveat: these are Bing surfaces only. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity are not included in this dataset. A citation is an appearance as a source, not a click, so citation growth does not automatically mean traffic growth. The protocol will be re-run monthly and the table updated with each version bump.
We publish fixes, not silent edits
Every number on this page carries a dataset version (currently 1.3.0). When a statistic is materially corrected, the change is logged here with the date, the old value, the new value, and the reason. An empty log is itself a signal: nothing here has needed a correction yet.
- 2026-10-17 clienvora-avg-mention: $2,271 average (market-rate framing) to $2,271 average price mentioned in public discussions. Reframed to clarify these are prices mentioned in public discussions, not quoted agency fees. Mean-median gap ($2,271 vs $129) shows heavy skew from enterprise figures.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does SEO cost in 2026?
Across 124 public SEO pricing discussions in our 2,085-post dataset, the median price mentioned is $129 and the mean is $2,271, with a $10 to $100,000 range spanning tool subscriptions to enterprise engagements. These are prices people mention in public posts, not quoted agency fees, so read them as spread rather than a market rate. Provider surveys put 63% of business spend between $500 and $5,000 a month.
Do AI Overviews reduce organic clicks?
Yes. When an AI Overview appears, the top page's click-through rate falls about 58% in Ahrefs' 300,000-keyword study, and Pew measured an 8% click rate on searches with an AI summary versus 15% without one. Seer found a 61% organic CTR drop, from 1.76% to 0.61%.
How often does Google update its algorithm?
Google rolled out seven named updates between February and September 2026, according to its Search Status Dashboard, including a spam update that finished in 19.5 hours. Core updates now ship every 6 to 12 weeks rather than twice a year, so recovery usually waits for the next core release.
Where do these SEO statistics come from?
Every statistic names its source, year, and sample. Most come from published industry studies by Ahrefs, Backlinko, BrightLocal, and Google's own documentation. Eight statistics come from our own dataset of 2,085 posts across 10 platforms, and each is labeled First-party so you know the difference.
What is the difference between Outcome, Industry, and First-party?
Outcome statistics measure results: rankings, clicks, conversions, and traffic changes a site can experience. Industry statistics describe the market: survey figures, pricing benchmarks, and official update counts. First-party statistics come from our own 2,085-post dataset, collected and analyzed by Clienvora rather than a third party.
How often are these statistics updated?
The page is reviewed whenever major studies or Google updates change the numbers, and the date above shows the last review. Each statistic carries its own year, so you can tell current figures from established benchmarks. First-party statistics refresh each time the dataset collection runs.
Can I cite these statistics in my own content?
Yes. Cite the source name and year shown on each card, and link back to this page as the reference. Each card includes sample size and methodology so your readers can check the claim. Statistics with a source link open the original study directly.
Why do some statistics have medium confidence?
High confidence means large samples, official data, or studies with published methodology. Medium marks composite estimates, smaller panels, and field reports where the direction is reliable but the exact figure moves between samples. The methodology note on each card explains what the rating reflects.
Numbers this good still need a strategy.
AI Overviews now appear on 82.91% of US desktop branded searches, while the top organic result still earns 27.6% of clicks. Clienvora's AI search optimization and SEO services run on the same evidence collected on this page.
