How to Check Keyword Cannibalization with Search Console Data

Search Console will not hand you a query and page pair export. That missing button is why most sites never check for keyword cannibalization. This tool closes the gap: bring whatever export you already have and it does the grouping for you. Run it in four steps:

  1. Get your data. Pull query by page rows from Looker Studio, the Search Console API or your rank tracker. A plain CSV with query and page columns is enough. Clicks, impressions and position improve the score.
  2. Paste or drop the file. The checker auto-detects the headers, including localized exports, and reads everything in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
  3. Read the conflicts. Every query that ranks two or more of your pages gets a severity score from 0 to 100, a winner and one action to take. Close variant plurals and word orders are clustered together by default.
  4. Ship the fix tickets. Download the CSV, hand it to your developer or run the 301s yourself, then recheck in Search Console after 30 days.

Small queries below your impression floor are skipped on purpose. Ten impressions of noise never cost you traffic, and filtering them keeps the report honest.

How the Winner Recommendation Works

Most cannibalization tools stop at flagging problems. This one decides. Two engines run on your data:

  • Severity score. Three visible factors combine into one number: how evenly impressions split between pages (even splits mean Google cannot choose), how close the positions sit (a gap of 10 or more means Google already chose) and how evenly clicks split. Move the three sliders to match how aggressive you want the detection.
  • Winner score. Each competing page earns points from clicks share, impressions share, best position and a slight preference for simpler URLs. The top scorer is the page you keep.
  • Intent guard. If the queries differ only by intent words like free, checklist or pricing, the conflict is marked intentional and the advice is to leave the pages alone. That kills the false positives that make other checkers untrustworthy.

The result is an action you can execute: 301 to the winner, set a canonical, consolidate content or monitor. When a conflict needs content work, score the loser with our GEO content grader before you decide to merge or rewrite. If the conflicts point to template problems, our SEO audit services cover the structural fixes.

Free Keyword Cannibalization Tool: What You Get

This keyword cannibalization tool runs entirely in your browser, so you can test it before you trust it with a full export. What it gives you in one pass:

  • Every conflicting query. Two or more of your URLs ranking for the same query, grouped with close variants.
  • A named winner. One URL to keep, backed by clicks, impressions and position instead of a guess.
  • One action per conflict. 301, canonical, consolidate or monitor, exported as fix tickets your developer can run.
  • Intent awareness. Overlaps on purpose stay unflagged, so the report only shows conflicts worth your time.

Run it monthly alongside our SEO Keyword Gap to catch new conflicts early.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is keyword cannibalization?

Keyword cannibalization happens when two or more pages on your site compete for the same search query. Google picks one URL to rank, positions bounce between the competing pages and clicks split, so neither page reaches its potential.

How do I check keyword cannibalization for free?

Export query and page data from Google Search Console, Looker Studio or any rank tracker, then paste it into this checker. It groups every query, flags the ones ranking two or more of your pages, scores each conflict and names the winning URL. No account and no data upload.

What data do I need to paste into the checker?

A CSV or pasted table with at least a query column and a page column. Clicks, impressions and position columns are optional but improve the severity score and the winner choice. Looker Studio, Search Console API and Ahrefs or Semrush exports all work.

How does this tool choose the winning page?

Each competing page gets a score built from clicks share, impressions share, best position and URL depth. The highest score wins. The panel then recommends an action: 301 to the winner, set a canonical, consolidate content or leave the overlap alone when the queries target different intents.

How do I fix keyword cannibalization?

Download the fix tickets CSV. For strong conflicts pick one winner, 301 the losers and point internal links at the winner. For intentional overlaps leave the pages alone. Recheck after 30 days in Search Console to confirm the winner holds the ranking.

Is my keyword data uploaded?

No. Parsing and scoring run in your browser with local JavaScript. Your Search Console exports often contain private client data, so nothing is sent to a server and nothing is stored after you close the tab.
